Op 14 augustus 1996 werd de Amsterdam ArenA officieel geopend door koningin Beatrix(zie foto). Zij trok aan een lint , de doeken gingen voor de tribunes weg en het hele stadion werd zichtbaar. Daarna werd door Frank Rijkaard een fakkel binnengebracht die een week door heel Nederland gedragen was, en die aangestoken is in de Meer, het oude stadion. Het vuur werd overgebracht op een grote fakkel. Daarna wordt er een wedstrijd gespeeld tussen Ajax en AC Milan, die door Ajax met 3-0 verloren wordt.
De eerste goal in dit nieuwe stadion wordt gescoord door Dejan Savicevic. De eerste Nederlander die er scoort is John Bosman van FC Twente in een bekerwedstrijd tegen Ajax 2.
De eerste scorende Ajacied is Kiki Musampa. De ArenA is een zeer modern voetbalstadion, maar er kan meer gedaan worden dan voetballen, want het is een multifunctioneel bouwwerk. Er kunnen bijvoorbeeld ook popconcerten worden gehouden. Het bijzonderste onderdeel van de ArenA is het dak. Dit dak kan namelijk open en dicht geschoven worden. Dit is het enige stadion in Europa met afsluitbaar dak, alleen in Canada zijn er twee stadions die dat ook hebben. Als het dak dicht is is het stadion niet hermetisch afgesloten, want er zit twee meter ruimte tussen het schuifdak en het gewone dak. Het dak is in 20 minuten te sluiten. Ook bijzonder is de weg die onder het stadion door loopt. Het stadion is voorzien van twee videoschermen waarop doelpunten en andere actie kunnen worden herhaald. Het stadion is 235 meter lang, 180 meter breed en 78 meter hoog. Het dak bestaat uit twee bewegende panelen van 36 bij 105 meter. Er zijn 51.324 zitplaatsen in de ArenA.

Midland maakt verkoop aan Spyker bekend
Midland heeft officieel de verkoop van het Formule 1-team bekendgemaakt. Midland kondigde de deal door middel van een persbericht aan. Officieel heeft Spyker alle aandelen gekocht. Het is echter Michiel Mol die de hele constructie mogelijk heeft gemaakt.Het team zal door het leven gaan als Spyker MF1Racing.
De maandenlange onderhandelingen zijn niet voor niets geweest. Een Nederlands F1-team is een feit. Alex Shnaider, de voormalig-eigenaar van het team, verkocht al zijn aandelen in de renstal aan Spyker. In totaal is een bedrag van $106.6 miljoen dollar overeenkomen voor de verkoop.
Dit bedrag zal in drie termijnen betaalt moeten worden. Voor dertig september moet de Nederlandse delegatie $68.6 miljoen dollar betalen. Daarna volgen in twee jaar twee termijnen van $15 miljoen en $23 miljoen.
Over de nieuwe motor is officieel nog niets bekendgemaakt. Ferrari wordt genoemd, maar kan nog niet aangekondigd worden. Het team laat weten hier snel duidelijkheid over te geven.
